Why Choose Snug Harbor as your host? Why pay 4 dollar or more every month for space that you will never even use? We partnered up with a small non-profit organization for about a year to provide affordable webhosting. Along the way, we learned some of the big companies' secrets. Many of the big companies that offer large amounts of space for unbelievably low prices #1, are on outdated servers (which is ok for most sites, but some sites do need "the best") and #2, most of these companies "oversell" their space. What this means is that they sell the same space over and over again to several people. Why? Because they know that the majority of the people they sell to will never use more than a fraction of their space. I personally run several websites, and paying for separate hosting accounts for each one is simply too expensive. From my own experience and from what I have seen in the past from customers, I know that many small sites only take up 10-20 mb of space. My packages start at just $6 per year for 50 mb of space which should be plenty for the average person. Why Be A Reseller? Do you also have multiple sites to run? Our "reseller" packages start at just $5 per month for 1 gig of space... That's 1,000 megabytes! With a reseller package, you can host unlimited domains under one account. This could be used for your own personal sites, or you could "resell" the space that you aren't using for a profit. Working with CPanel and WHM: I prefer to only host through servers that offer CPanel and WHM (Web Host Manager). CPanel is a type of control panel. This is where you can go to look at how much space you are using and to browse and upload your files. You can also FTP to upload your site. When working with CPanel, always remember to upload your site into the folder labeled "www" and make sure to save your main page as "index.html" WHM (Web Host Manager) is only for those of you who have a reseller account. Through WHM, you can set up and create accounts for other websites. If you do not know how to use WHM or if you do not have the time, I can set up your accounts for an additional fee. You can pay $2 per account as you are ready for it to be set up or you can pre-pay a non-refundable $10 for me to set up 10 accounts as you need them. Personal IPs: Why get your own personal IP? As hard as I try to make sure that only good sites are put on this server, I cannot guarantee anything. If a person creates an illegal site on a shared IP and that IP gets banned, all sites on that IP will go down. If uptime is important to you or your business, you may want to consider getting your own private IP. Contact Me for details about getting your own IP. Another note about IPs: While doing SEO (search engine optimization) research, I found that having too many sites on the same IP can lower your ranking on major search engines. And being on the same IP as a site that has been banned from a search engine can cause even more problems. After reading this, I checked out the theory. One site that I have been working on which gets an "ok" spot on the search engine results page shares an IP with about 400 other sites. (They show up on the first page, often first few results when you specifically search for their products by name. However, if you search for their type of products in general, they are burried behind several pages of other results.) Then I randomly picked a few sites that had great rankings. Most of them were on IPs with 50 or less other sites, or they had their own personal IP. For this reason, I have decided not to allow many sites to be hosted on the same IP. I plan on keeping the number or sites hosted on the same IP under 50 and promise to keep it under 100. While this doesn't guarantee you a high ranking in the SERP (search engine results pages), it can't hurt. To see how many sites you are currently sharing an IP with, visit http://whois.webhosting.info/ Who To Buy Your Domain From: Before selecting who to buy your domain from, please read the note below. In general, I recommend that people get their domains through yahoo! They have specials on a regular basis where you can buy your first domain for as low as $5 or sometimes even $2 per year. They also have a fairly easy to navigate domain control panel. However, advanced users and those who plan on becoming advanced users may prefer Godaddy which offers more features. And Last But Not Least, A Note About Private Nameservers: This site is hosted through my other site, HarmoniousHosting.com (I am rebuilding this site too, got tired of the same old look!) I got this domain name (snugharborproductions.com) from Yahoo! To tell Yahoo! where I was hosting this name, I had to go into their domain control panel and reset the DNS (Domain Name Servers) to ns1.harmonioushosting.com and ns2.harmonioushosting.com . It is a fairly simple thing to do, but it can be complicated before someone walks you through it. I would be happy to help any Yahoo! or Godaddy customers reset their nameservers. But back to the private nameservers... Those of you with a reseller account may not want people doing a "whois" search to find out who you buy hosting from. In this case, you will want to set up your own private nameservers. Then you will be able to tell people to set their DNS to ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com. For this, you should get your own IP and it will be easiest to set up if your domain is hosted through Godaddy or one of their resellers. If you need further explanation of anything on this page, please let me know. I do plan on editing this page in the future when I get more time and would be happy to clear up any confusion and appreciate help finding which areas I need to fix. |
